# Getting Started

Before you can send funds through Chariot, your organization must claim and verify its Chariot account. You will then configure funding, your grant letter, and any programs your organization needs.

### Step 1: Claim your Chariot account

Grantmakers use the same secure account-claiming and compliance process as other nonprofit organizations on Chariot. See [Onboarding Guide](/onboarding/onboarding-guide.md).

***

### Step 2: Choose how you will fund disbursements

You can fund your account in advance by ACH credit or ACH debit, or use on-demand funding to pull the required amount when a disbursement is created.

See [Fund Your Account](/disbursements/for-grantmakers/fund-your-account.md) for instructions and timing.

***

### Step 3: Customize your grant letter

When Chariot must deliver a grant by check, the check is mailed with a grant letter branded for your organization or program. Configure your name, logo, contact details, signature, and legal attestation before sending your first disbursement.

See [Customize Your Grant Letter](/disbursements/for-grantmakers/customize-your-grant-letter.md)

***

### Step 4: Set up programs if applicable

Programs allow a grantmaker to operate multiple grantmaking services under one EIN while keeping separate balances, branding, grant letters, and attestations.

Programs are not necessary for every organization. If you support multiple grantmaking brands or clients, contact the Chariot team before you begin disbursing.

See [Set Up and Manage Programs](/disbursements/for-grantmakers/set-up-and-manage-programs.md)

***

### Step 5: Confirm your approval settings

By default, submitted disbursements can enter a Needs approval queue, allowing an authorized team member to review them before funds are released. Chariot can also configure your account so eligible disbursements are submitted directly for execution without a separate dashboard approval.

Contact <support@givechariot.com> to confirm or change your approval configuration.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.givechariot.com/disbursements/for-grantmakers/getting-started.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
